Learn@TJU App: Enhanced for Residents

The free Learn@TJU app, introduced in 2016, gave Jefferson students, faculty, and staff convenient mobile access to TJU campus and academic resources–including links to key web sites, calendars, contact information, and news. Updates to the app have included social media integration, emergency contact information, and the introduction of role-based personas for navigating the content. The latest version of the app features a new Resident persona, allowing users to focus on content curated specifically for Jefferson residents.

Working with graduate medical education faculty and the Jefferson Clinical Research Institute (JCRI), the Center for Teaching & Learning updated the app to address feedback from residents about the difficulties associated with negotiating research at Jefferson.

The new Research tile streamlines access to three broad content areas:

  • Education focuses on learning modules developed by the JCRI, including the Clinical Road Map, an introduction to Clinical Research at Jefferson.
  • Important Dates allows residents to easily locate a calendar of upcoming research presentations across the enterprise.
  • Research Mentoring links learners interested in conducting research with potential mentors.

If you’re new to Learn@TJU, search for “Learn at TJU” in the Apple Store or Google Play (Android version) and give it a try.

10th Annual Faculty Days Program, June 5th

The 10th Annual Faculty Days Program, Jefferson’s end-of-year tradition of collegial sharing of best practices in teaching and learning, will take place on Tuesday, June 5th, 2018, from 9 am to 5 pm, on the East Falls Campus: the DEC Field Center, 4201 Henry Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19144.

This year’s theme is New Frontiers in Collaboration. Topics discussed will focus on collaboration, teaching across disciplines, student engagement, pedagogies in practice, and general teaching & learning.

The program will consist of several delivery formats: an opening keynote presentation, ignite sessions (10-minute micro-presentations), plenary sessions, a lunch time poster session, and afternoon immersive workshops. Sessions have been grouped and scheduled by thematic tracks, including: active learning, course/curricular design, communities of learning, educational technology, engaging learners, academic success, collaborative learning, and wellness in learning.

Customized Consulting to Help Your Writing Teams

The CTL Office for Professional Writing, Publishing, and Communication (formerly The Writing Center) already offers researchers at Jefferson on-demand support for their research writing. Now we are introducing a service to help research teams improve their group writing efforts.

As writing consultants, we’ll look at how your team produces research writing. Can you streamline the process you use to complete drafts, comment on them, and revise them for publication? We’ll offer customized guidance and writing training, based on your team’s needs, to help them get their writing done. We can help teams to improve any part of their process or coach individuals to improve their writing products. For example, we can attend a kickoff meeting and help scope out the writing plan. We can also provide editing training for the whole team or coaching for those who are polishing the drafts.

The goals of a customized writing consultation:

  • Reduced frustration for writing team members
  • Increased efficiency for getting writing done as a team
  • Shared language for overcoming writing obstacles
  • Improved quality of team-produced drafts

How it works:

  • Team leaders invite us to meet with the writing team
  • Consultants and team discuss their writing process and obstacles
  • Team provides writing samples to demonstrate possible needs
  • Writing consultants develop an action plan (editing, writing process improvement, time management, coaching)
  • Team leaders approve or revise plan
  • Writing consultants deliver training or coaching as agreed

CTL/SML Recent Changes and Additions

Jefferson’s Center for Teaching & Learning and Scott Memorial Library would like to share some recent changes and additions with you:

Personnel Changes

  • Gary Kaplan, MS, AHIP, has recently been promoted to Scholarly Communications Librarian. One of Gar’s key roles in new position in scholarly communications will be supporting the training initiatives for LabArchives, the recently acquired electronic lab notebook tool.
  • Kelsey Duinkerken, MSI, our Special Collections and Digital Services Librarian, will have additional responsibility for the Jefferson Digital Commons (JDC). We expect continued growth in the JDC as our institution has grown considerably in the past few years.
  • Pam Walter, MFA, joins the Center for Teaching and Learning as Academic Science Writing Specialist. Pam will allow us to meet the growing need for publication support. She also brings more than 20 years of teaching, writing, and communication coaching experience to our team.

New Name for Writing Center

 We’re also announcing a name change for our Writing Center to emphasize their focus on professional writing and publication, which differs from the course-related writing support provided by the Student Writing Center. The CTL’s team will now be the Office for Professional Writing, Publishing, and Communication. Jennifer, Pam and Julie welcome all Jefferson faculty, staff, and students looking for help with professional writing and preparing for conference presentations.

One Button Studio 

Finally, later this Spring the newly completed One Button Studio will open. The studio provides easy–literally one button–high quality video recording to your USB drive. Equipped with the necessary video projection and recording tools, the studio includes a large monitor if you’re presenting slides or other online content, a green-screen if you want to later edit the file and drop in a background of your choosing, or a Learning Glass light board. The Learning Glass allows you to create short instructional videos, similar to the popular Kahn Academy recordings.

We’re currently training the support staff to help first-time users. Even though there is a single button to start the recording process, we want someone to help you select between the monitor, green screen or Learning Glass options for a good experience. After that, it really can be self-service. The One Button Studio can be reserved in advance and will be open to all Jefferson faculty, staff, and students. Look for our ribbon cutting ceremony announcement later this Spring.

Last Chance to Weigh In on LMS Selection

Earlier this year the Educational Technology Advisory Committee and Center for Teaching and Learning invited three Learning Management System vendors to demonstrate how their solution helps students learn while making instructional delivery easier for faculty. Don’t worry if you missed the live demos. Jefferson faculty, staff and students are now invited to view recordings of those sessions and to login to the test areas (Sandbox links) created for each product. Select the appropriate username and password based on the role you want to test. For example, to try Blackboard as an instructor you could login as instructor14 with the password instructor14. For Canvas as a student you could use student4 and password4.

Clinician Well-Being Knowledge Hub: New Resource from NAM

The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) has launched the Clinician Well-Being Knowledge Hub a comprehensive online repository for health system leaders, clinicians, and trainees that contains resources highlighting promising approaches for combating clinician burnout, such as research and news articles, toolkits, peer-reviewed literature, and reports.

More than half of U.S. physicians experience burnout, a syndrome characterized by a high degree of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a low sense of personal accomplishment at work. Nurses, dentists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals are also experiencing high rates of burnout, putting an unsustainable strain on the health care system.

Improving clinician well-being requires sustained action at the organizational, state, and national levels. This knowledge hub provides a comprehensive overview of the causes of clinician burnout; its consequences for healthcare professionals, patients, and their families; and innovative approaches that organizations can take to promote well-being.

Launched in 2017, the Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience is a network of organizations committed to reversing trends in clinician burnout, with the goals of raising the visibility of clinician burnout, improving understanding of challenges to clinician well-being, and elevating evidence-based, multidisciplinary solutions that will improve patient care by caring for the caregiver. The Action Collaborative will host a public meeting on May 2 in Washington, D.C. The meeting will feature Expressions of Clinician Well-Being, a pop-up art exhibition focused on clinician well-being.

How Are We Free: Exhibit at Scott Through 4/30

How Are We Free, an exhibit on display (through April 30th) in the Scott Library 2nd floor gallery area, was produced by LifeLines: Voices Against the Other Death Penalty. The LifeLines Project is a media project conducted across the prison walls to highlight the voices and analysis of those serving Death By Incarceration sentences, more commonly known as Life Without Parole.

Join us for the Opening Event: Presentation by exhibition curators Layne Mullett and Emily Abendroth – along with audio from incarcerated participants– on the creation of the exhibit and the role that art can play in addressing mass incarceration.
WHEN: Monday, April 2nd, 5:30pm – 7:00pm
WHERE: Scott Library, Room 200A
Refreshments provided.

About the Exhibit
How Are We Free explores the nature of freedom and confinement through creative collaboration between people who have been sentenced to die in prison and visual artists outside the prison walls. Visual economies and regimes of power have been massively employed by the state and the media in order to criminalize people. This exhibit interrupts those regimes and instead invites viewers to investigate what actually creates conditions for safety, healing, justice, transformation, and liberation.

The participating artists are: Makeba Rainey (Philadelphia), Noelle Lorraine Williams (New Jersey), Matice Moore (Baltimore), Alma Sheppard-Matsuo (Philadelphia), Gb Kim (Brooklyn), Robin Markle (Philadelphia), and Kate Deciccio (Washington DC). Their collaborators on the inside are Clinton “Nkechi” Walker, Terri Harper, Felix “Phill” Rosado, Avis Lee, David “Dawud” Lee, Marie “Mechie” Scott, and Charles Boyd.

New EMS Web App to Manage Center City Campus Room Reservations

In an effort to streamline Jefferson’s self-service Center City campus room reservations, Jefferson will launch a new app in April. Staff and faculty from throughout the Jefferson enterprise will be able to manage Center City room reservations and event details online using the EMS Web App starting April 16.

The EMS Web App can be used to book rooms managed by the Office of Academic Services on the Center City campus. The app will show up-to-date availability and room descriptions, and allow users to request support services.

By using the app, staff will be more in control of the room reservation and event management process. The tool will allow for quicker reservation approvals and an improved user experience.

With this new tool you will be able to:

  • View availability of event and academic space on campus
  • Search for space by size, layout capabilities and room features
  • Submit room requests and track the approval process
  • View and email reservation summaries
  • Request AV resources for your event
  • Communicate room set-ups needed to custodial services

Training sessions will be announced on the Space Management & Room Reservations website in the coming weeks and reference material will be made available to users once app is launched.

23 E-books New to Scott Library in March

Scott Library added these 23 e-books in March to the growing collection:

 

March Updates to Library Search

Scott Library’s Search now includes peer-review icons, book editions, and more forgiving parsing of ampersands. Launched in May, the new tool provides one-stop searching for books and e-books, videos, articles, digital media, and more. Since July, there have been over 250,000 searches.

Title Search Enhancement
The title search was changed to treat the ampersand character (&) and the word “and” the same in phrase searches. Previously, the “&”character was parsed out as a special character, which could lead to issues with known item searches-for example, short journal title searches such as Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Peer Review Icons
This enhancement increases the visibility and accessibility of peer-reviewed documents by replacing the text-only indication with a more visible icon. In the screenshot below, the article from Internal and Emergency Medicine is clearly identified as peer reviewed, compared to the second result from Health Facilities Management.

Now Hiring: Apple Student Reps for TJU Center City Campus

Apple is looking for students to work with the Campus Rep Program and Account Team to tailor program initiatives to Jefferson campus-specific opportunities. The ideal candidate is comfortable planning and frequently presenting, is already connected with groups and organizations on campus, and is excited to expand this network even further.

Key Qualifications:

  • Ability to commit to working on your campus between 10 to 14 hours per week for the full term beginning on May 1, 2018 or from date of hire through May 10, 2019. 
  • Ability to work flexible hours and days, including weekends, on campus throughout the school year and summer months based on business needs. You must be present on campus during the summer months.
  • Actively enrolled in the school listed on the job description from May 1, 2018 through May 10, 2019
  • Ability to travel and stay overnight to attend the Campus Rep Program Training, dates to be determined, in Cupertino, California
