Check out the new Jefferson University Libraries website!

This August, Jefferson University Libraries (Paul J. Gutman Library, Scott Memorial Library, Wilmer Library) launched a new website! Check out the updated site (library.jefferson.edu) to take a peek at our new look.

On the updated Gutman and Scott homepages, you can search each library’s physical and online collections, reserve meeting space, request interlibrary loan services, chat with a librarian immediately, and request a consultation.

And don’t miss the Jefferson Libraries blog, where we’ll highlight new resources, promote upcoming events in the libraries and Design Center, and share university and library news.

Professional Writing & Presentation Workshops at East Falls: Register Now!

Starting next month, experts from the Office for Professional Writing, Publishing, and Communication (OPWPC) will host writing and presentation workshops for East Falls faculty and researchers.

If you are writing for publication or developing conference presentations, let us help! Workshops will be held in the Gutman Library one Tuesday a month starting in September. Get tips and tools to prioritize writing, discover the habits of successful writers, learn how to assess a journal’s impact factor, and more.

Join us on Tuesday, September 10, from 1:15 – 2:15 pm, for our first workshop: Introduction to the OPWPC as a Resource. Check out the complete list of workshops at both Gutman Library (East Falls) and Scott Memorial Library (Center City) and sign up here.

Looking for one-on-one help? Our experts will be on-site for individual consultations on Tuesdays in the library throughout the year. At a consultation, we’ll offer feedback and guidance, whether you need motivation getting started on a manuscript or presentation, advice on structure and flow, or feedback on a finished draft. Below is our one-on-one consultation schedule. Q&A with Meg Leister, Access Services Supervisor at Gutman Library

Walk into Gutman Library and chances are the first thing you hear is a warm, “Hello, welcome to the library!”  Meg Leister, the friendly face behind the Circulation Desk, greets each patron with a smile, immediately jumping into action to help find what they need.

If you aren’t greeted by Meg, it’s one of the library student workers, who she hires, trains, and supports. We sat down with Meg to learn about how long she’s been at Jefferson, what motivates her to keep coming back every day, and what she thinks are the best-kept secrets about the library.

Q: How long have you been working at Jefferson?
It will be nine years this August. I’ve always worked in the Gutman Library.

Q: What is your favorite thing about working in the library?
Hands down, my favorite thing about working in the library is interacting with the students. The best is when we have student workers who work here all four years of college, they become a part of our group! It’s always sad when they graduate and leave, but it’s great to have students who come back year after year. We get to see them grow.

Q: Do you keep in touch with any of the students after graduation?
Yes! I try to keep in touch with them. Some will ask me to write job recommendations. It’s fun to see where they end up.

Q: What is the best-kept secret or resource for students here at the library that people may not know?
I think students don’t always take advantage of the fact that there is a librarian who is a liaison to their discipline and who they can contact at any time set up a one-on-one appointment. In addition to the reference support that’s available, it’s great that there is someone who really knows their area of study and can help.

Q: If you’re not at the library, where can we find you on campus?
I love going for walks on campus. I take different routes. I love walking to the tennis courts.

The campus is so beautiful to explore as the seasons’ change. I also love visiting the Design Center to see what’s there and eat outside. I like to sit and imagine the parties and fun they must have had there back in the day.

All postdocs, researchers, and PhDs can join PSERT.

Canvas is Coming: FAQs, Timeline, and Getting Started!

Jefferson transitions learning management systems (LMS) from Blackboard to Canvas next spring (June 2020). We know that many faculty are excited and eager to get started with Canvas now. As we begin the switch, we want to answer some questions we’ve received from faculty, provide a brief timeline of the Canvas project, and offer a few action steps you can take right away!

Canvas is intuitive for faculty and provides the best learner-centered experience for our students. Based on reviews and feedback we received from learners and faculty on both campuses during LMS testing,  we know Canvas is the best LMS for us!

When will Blackboard go away?
Jefferson retires Blackboard on June 30, 2020. 

Should I create my courses in Blackboard or Canvas?
We strongly recommend that newly developed courses be created in Canvas and not in Blackboard. Any course that extends beyond the June 30, 2020 retirement, must be created in Canvas. You may select between Blackboard and Canvas for courses that have previously been taught.

I’m ready to get started! Is there any training offered to faculty now?
Yes! To get started, we suggest completing the self-directed online training called “Growing with Canvas.”

Canvas created this asynchronous course with two primary goals. First, the course introduces you to Canvas as a learner to experience the platform. Second, the course showcases evidence-based course design tools and strategies available in the Canvas environment.

Please email Julie Phillips for access to the training and your personalized Canvas sandbox, where you can explore and complete Growing with Canvas tasks and assignments.

What types of resources and training guides can I utilize?
The CTL is creating a library of Canvas resources that will be available on the Canvas website (canvas.jefferson.edu) soon.These resources include step-by-step written guides and video tutorials for the most common actions and tasks. We will post a training calendar with details on workshops, dates, and links to register to the website this summer.

What in-person trainings will be offered?
The CTL will offer three types of in-person training: scheduled workshops, Canvas Camps, and one-on-one sessions.

We will hold workshops  on both the Center City and the East Falls campuses. Select workshops will be available virtually, and some workshops will be recorded. Registration for these workshops will open in mid- to late-August. *Workshop titles are subject to change*

Canvas Camps
We plan on facilitating at least four Canvas Camps in Academic Year 2019-2020 in addition to workshops. These Camps will focus on building your course in Canvas. We will offer both full and half-day options for Jeffersonians.

Dates for Canvas Camps have not yet been set. We anticipate hosting Canvas Camps in late December 2019 or early January 2020, mid to late spring 2020, and the summer of 2020. We expect to host Canvas Camp on both the Center City and the East Falls campuses.

One-on-One Sessions
The CTL will host Canvas office hours for faculty to schedule one-on-one sessions. Additionally, we are happy to attend Faculty Meetings or relevant committee meetings to present a 15-minute introduction to Canvas.

If a College, department, or program has internal adoption and/or benchmark dates they are considering, we’re happy to collaborate on a series of workshops to help the College achieve its goals in Canvas.

I can’t wait until next spring! Can I be an early adopter and make the switch to Canvas now?
We suggest early adopters complete the online Growing with Canvas course as soon as possible and schedule a follow-up consultation with a curriculum and instructional design specialist. A course(s) with lower enrollment for the fall semester makes an ideal pilot course in Canvas.

Ready to dive into Canvas? Here are three things you can do right away:

  • Email Julie Phillips if you are interested in being an early adopter, wish to sign up for Canvas training now ,or would like us to come speak at your next faculty meeting.
  • Bookmark the Canvas website and check back frequently for updated training sessions, resources, and news. Follow the CTL on Twitter for additional Canvas updates.
  • Spread the word! Share your excitement with fellow faculty. We’ve got Canvas swag (buttons, pens, note pads) for those interested in helping get the word out.

Join Us for Camp EdVenture on August 2

Join us for an interactive day of exploring course design, active learning, and assessment ideas to bring back to your classroom. This will be a place to stretch your imagination, consider new and engaging techniques, and learn more about the power of technologies that support the learner experience.

When: Friday, August 2,  9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: The Tuttleman Center, Room 209, East Falls Campus
Who: Camp EdVenture is open to any full or part-time faculty member, staff member, or graduate student at Jefferson

Camp EdVenture consists of:

      • Three 45-Minute Morning Sessions
      • Lunch + “Implementables”
      • Afternoon Technology Sessions to Support Learning

Throughout  the day, participants will:

      • apply backward design to construct or revise courses
      • embed assessment tools to quantify students’ learning outcomes
      • use a variety of pedagogical tools for engaging students in active, collaborative, authentic learning
      • employ technology tools, including Blackboard, that support the above strategies and tools

LabArchives Summer and Fall Webinars

LabArchives, the electronic research notebook, became available to Jefferson research and education communities last September. Since then, 529 users have recorded 154,887 activities in 817 notebooks. IS&T has conducted site surveys for 78 labs, and the Center for Teaching & Learning hosted 17 training sessions with 258 attendees.

JDC adds over 1,800 historical photos of Jefferson (Center City & East Falls)

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the Jefferson Digital Commons (JDC) just added about 2 million to its collection!

The JDC recently uploaded two collections of historic photographs of Jefferson, capturing moments from both the Center City and East Falls campuses. (The East Falls collection includes pictures of the former Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science.) 

A military physician in a jeep at the edge of a desert near Cairo, Egypt at Base Hospital No. 38 Creation date: 1942

The Center City collection covers a range of topics, primarily military medicine (Vietnam, WWI,WWII), students (mostly nursing and medical from the late 1890s onward), Jefferson buildings (architectural drawings, aerial views, and construction photographs), and faculty portraits and photographs. These photos were previously only accessible via the PHDIL database. Check out the complete Center City collection here.

The East Falls collection includes yearbook photos from the Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science and offers a glimpse into life at the school between the 1920s – 80s. Highlights include photos of the 1925 men’s basketball team, a swanky 1950s holiday dance, and a 1980s homecoming queen. The Jefferson Digital Commons is a service of Thomas Jefferson University’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The Commons is a showcase for Jefferson books and journals, peer-reviewed scholarly publications, unique historical collections from the University Archives, and teaching tools. 

Pivot adds options calendar and download options

Pivot, a database of current funding opportunities, now offers two new features to manage results once logged into your account. You can download them in standard formats: HTML, Excel, ASCII, or tagged text. And you can display them on a calendar, either within Pivot, downloading them as static entries for your calendar, or as a dynamic subscription in your calendar that will reflect updated or new opportunities. Access Pivot via Scott Library or Gutman Library. To get the most out of Pivot, request a consultation with a librarian at Scott or Gutman.

Gutman Library: It’s Amnesty Week!

You forgot? We forgive!

It’s Amnesty Week at Gutman Library (April 29 – May 4), which means it’s your chance to return any overdue library materials without paying the fines.

Simply return your overdue materials to the Circulation Desk along with at least one non-perishable food item or personal hygiene product to donate to the Ramily Market. Items must be returned to the Circulation Desk. Items cannot be left at the Book Drop.

The Ramily Market is a free resource center stocked with food and hygiene products for Rams in need.

The Ramily Market needs the following materials:

  • Grains (packaged pasta, quinoa, rice, cereal, oatmeal)
  • Fruit (canned fruit, dried fruit, apple sauce)
  • Peanut Butter
  • Canned Meat (canned tuna, chickpeas, beans)
  • Canned Vegetables

And personal items, including:

  • Menstrual Products
  • Soaps and Cleansers
  • Toothpaste and Toothbrushes
  • Packaged Toilet Paper and Tissues

Note: This offer does not apply to lost or damaged items borrowed from Gutman Library. This offer is only valid the week of April 29 – May 4, 2019, but includes late fee forgiveness for any materials borrowed previously to or during Amnesty Week.

Research smarter with EndNote, a citation management tool

Leave behind the tedious work of formatting bibliographies, finding full text, and searching for references with EndNote! 

EndNote is a reference management software that gives you back time to do what matters most – research and publish your work. With EndNote, you can save references from databases and websites, organize sources with tags and folders, and create in-text citations and bibliographies within Microsoft Word. The tool provides the option to share references with colleagues.

To install and start using EndNote, download the software and visit the library guide for tips. EndNote joins Jefferson’s other citation management options, F1000Workspace and RefWorks.

Join us this Friday, January 11, as we celebrate the campus-wide launch of Adobe Creative Cloud. Hear from Adobe educator Stephen Hart as he shares mobile applications, digital storytelling tools, and best practices. Have your specific Adobe questions answered during a Q&A session.

Kick off 2019 with LabArchives

The following message comes from the Jefferson LabArchives Project Team and was updated on February 26, 2019.  

LabArchives, the electronic research notebook, became available to Jefferson research and education communities in September. Since then, 433 users have recorded 112,788 activities in 684 notebooks! IS&T has conducted site surveys for 56 labs, and the Center for Teaching & Learning hosted 11 training sessions with 209 attendees.

FAQs about LabArchives

What is the storage limit?

There is no limit to the total amount of data in your notebook. However, each file must be less than 15GB, and files larger than 250MB are not indexed for searching. Use tags and the description field to improve findability. These large files are stored in Jefferson’s institutional Box account and will display with a generic Box icon. Folder Monitor has a 250MB per file maximum. 

Is there a budget for tech upgrades?
We are currently conducting a needs assessment.

Can I scan in paper notes?
Yes, you can scan or take pictures of paper notes. Do so as soon as possible. These notes won’t be searchable, so it is especially important to use clear folder and page organization, naming conventions, and tagging.

If you’re creating content digitally, you may benefit from setting up Folder Monitor to automatically upload files to your notebook.

If you’re using software that doesn’t currently have LabArchives integration (see the list of partner applications and integrations), email a feature request to support@labarchives.com.

Is there a Folder Monitor for Linux?
Versions of Folder Monitor are available for Windows and Mac, but not currently for Linux. To request this, email support@labarchives.com.

Can Folder Monitor mirror my complex folder/subfolder structure?
Yes, in the Upload Rule Editor > Sub-Folders > select Map to create and maintain LA Destination sub-folders that match Local Sources sub-folders.

Is it possible to permanently delete files?
The ability for users to permanently delete files has been turned off. However, if there is a file that a user must have deleted, he or she can email the site administrator at LASupport@jefferson.edu.

Are multiple users able to update the electronic resource notebook at the same time, and if so, how will the changes be synched and displayed in the notebook for each user?
For rich text entries, widgets, headings, and plain text entries, users cannot simultaneously edit the same entry at the same time. While a user is working on an entry, it will lock, preventing another user from editing that entry. Other users will see those edits as they save, and users can edit other entries in the page or notebook. Once the editing user saves the entry, it will immediately unlock, and others will be able to edit. See the knowledge article for a video and further explanation on entry locking.

What kinds of situations call for page signing?
Page signing is required before running an experiment to get approval that a procedure meets safety requirements.

Are the LabArchives training sessions being recorded?
Yes, they are stored in the Jefferson Users notebook in the Webinar recordings folder. If you need access, contact LASupport@jefferson.edu.

Jefferson Goes Green: GreenFILE Now Available

GreenFILE, a database that provides research on environmental sustainability, is now accessible to all Jefferson students, faculty, and researchers. The database includes more than 880,000 records on the following subjects:

  • Global climate change
  • Pollution
  • Recycling
  • Renewable energy
  • Sustainable agriculture

GreenFILE includes scholarly titles and government reports detailing the human impact on the environment. Access GreenFILE here and learn more about the EBSCO database here.

Register Now: 2019 Winter Writing Retreat

Will “write and publish more” be one of your resolutions for 2019? If so, commit to it by registering for our January Writing Retreat.

Attending the two-day retreat will give you protected time to write in a comfortable, supportive environment for writing. The time is yours to spend however you wish, writing-wise (past participants have worked on abstracts, first drafts of manuscripts, and revisions). Writing consultants will be on hand to give feedback or guidance if you need them.

When:  Saturday, January 12, 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 13, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Where: Scott Memorial Library (1020 Walnut Street), Room 308

The weekend retreat is open to all Jefferson researchers and faculty.
